Because of his background in theatre, Kevin approaches lighting in a different way to most. He is focused on creating results for clients, not just lighting up a space. This includes creating the appropriate mood for the space he is lighting, whether that is products in a shop window to entice customers, or creating a special ambience in a private lounge. While many see lighting design as a way to remove darkness, Kevin uses it to create a huge variety of benefits for his clients.

While electricians are skilled tradesmen, they are not lighting designers. They tend to light spaces without regard or knowledge of how effective lighting design can transform space into something special. To create the feel wanted by the client, colours, angles, focus and placement must all come together as one. This can only be achieved by a limited number of lighting designers who have the knowledge and foresight to maximise the value and benefits of a space.

This completely depends on the purpose of the lighting. It may be the same for a retail store or a private home, or it may be completely different. A jeweler, for example, may need warm lighting to focus on the product and entice customers, while a supermarket may want cooler lighting that entices people to keep moving.

Kevin is based in Christchurch, New Zealand, but has been contracted by clients across the globe. He has completed many successful projects in Australia, India, Dubai and Fiji as well as New Zealand.

As an independent designer, Kevin uses whatever lights are the best for a particular job. This usually means LEDs, or Light Emitting Diodes. He favours these because of their energy efficiency properties. These are just as efficient as alternatives and are constantly improving their efficiency. Kevin is passionate about the environment and is a member of the NZ Green Building Council.
